The Bracknell Hornets are pleased to announce that Head Coach Mark Saunders will return to the club for the 2020/2021 season.
After coaching at junior level for the Bracknell Ice Hockey Club, Saunders was appointed the Head Coach of the Hornets in January 2019. His first full season in charge saw the Hornets move back up to NIHL 1 after two seasons away, in which he led the Hornets to an impressive fourth place spot before the Coronavirus outbreak saw the season and subsequent playoffs cancelled.
The former defenceman turned his hand to coaching eight years ago, and had been coaching junior hockey at both conference and national level with England before taking a full time position with the Hornets.
Coach Saunders: “I’m delighted to be back at the helm of the Hornets again for the upcoming season, especially as I feel so short changed with the way the season has just wrapped up! A top four finish was what we set out to achieve at the beginning of last season and as a group I feel we learned a lot along the way to accomplishing our goal, I just wish we’d had a chance to take a good run at the playoffs as everything was really working well for us.
“Success can be measured in many ways and I feel as a team we achieved a lot of it last season. The development of junior players onto our roster, the playing time those players worked hard for and excelled in, the amount of players developed and subsequently signing with the Bees, the buy in from each and every player who was on the team, the support and framework working at BIHC and a fourth place league finish to name just a few.
“Although the season ended so abruptly and the fact that the next season feels so far away isn’t stopping the work go on behind the scenes to get the team ready to take the ice whenever the season starts and I can’t wait to get on the ice to get started.
“I hope to see you in September, or whenever the season starts. Stay safe.”
Hornets GM Danny Perchard: “It is great that Mark has agreed to continue as Head Coach for the Bracknell Hornets for the upcoming 2020/2021 season after successfully bringing the team to 4th place last season.
“Mark brings professionalism and attention to detail to his role and I am looking forward to working alongside him for another season.”
