Pre-season hockey got underway at The Hive on Saturday night, your hometown McTimoney Chiropractic Bracknell Hornets falling to a 1-4 defeat against the Streatham Redhawks.
The first period started even, with Bracknell and Streatham both creating chances. Starting goaltender Matt Croyle came up with some fine saves to keep his team in it early on.
A penalty picked up by Chris Cooke led to the opening goal of the game. Streatham forward Ivan Antonov capitalising on the power play opportunity to give Streatham the lead.
The further the period progressed, the more Bracknell seemed to find their feet. Three big chances were stopped by the Streatham goaltender, as they looked to tie things up in the final five minutes of the period. 0-1 at the end of the first.
If Bracknell were on top at the end of the first, they certainly weren’t at the start of the second. Just over two minutes in, Michael Farn doubled the Streatham lead. That wasn’t it for the scoring in the second, Rhys McCormick converting on a spin-o-rama to make it 0-3, in a period where Hornets goaltender Matt Croyle faced 18 shots on goal.
Although Streatham were the better team in the second period, that doesn’t mean Bracknell didn’t have their opportunities to score. The Hornets continued to be kept at bay by Streatham goaltender Damien King who had himself a fine night.
The third period provided a final chance for Bracknell to get back into the game. A flurry of penalties led to a four on three shorthanded goal being disallowed for Streatham.
Ben Ealey-Newman then gave the Hornets fans something to cheer about when he notched the Hornets’ first goal of the new season. Assisted by Tamas Elias. However, five minutes later, Streatham scored their fourth of the game. This time, Thomas Beesley from close range.
Beesley would then go on to hit the post, before Antonov should’ve made it five but fanned on his shot. With the Hornets on the end of a scoreline that they probably didn’t deserve, they had Sunday night to show Streatham what they can really do.
Sunday’s game in London was the McTimoney Chiropractic Bracknell Hornets’ last chance to prepare for the upcoming season. Next weekend, the real hockey starts as the Hornets travel to Slough for the first game of the NIHL 1 season.
Man of the match for the Bracknell Hornets was No. 78 Ben Ealey-Newman.
