This was Streatham’s first visit to The Hive during the regular season. They made a visit during pre-season, beating the Hornets by four goals to one. The regular season is a different beast however and even though Streatham were expected to beat the Hornets, the game was a lot closer than most might’ve anticipated.
The opening period was a cagey affair. Streatham dominated the play, just couldn’t beat Tom Annetts in the Hornets goal. Despite Streatham’s domination, it never felt as if the Hornets were out of control at any point. Yes, there were some desperate saves from Annetts, but nothing that you would consider overly lucky.
The first real action of the period came when Matt Foord and Brandon Miles decided to drop the gloves in the Hornets zone. Miles took exception to a late hit from Foord and decided to dish out his own penalty. However, it was largely disappointing as Foord was clearly nowhere near ready for the action and found himself in a very tough spot.
The first period would end scoreless, but it wouldn’t take long for the scoring to open at the start of the second. 14 seconds in and Streatham took the lead through Ivan Antonov. Streatham then doubled their lead nearly three minutes later when Adam Carr tucked one away.
From that point, it looked like the Hornets were going to fade into the night, but they managed to bring one back pretty quickly. Two minutes after Carr scored, Adam Bicknell scored his first goal of the season to bring the Hornets within one.
However, the Hornets would then fall foul to a shorthanded goal, Antonov grabbing his second of the game on the breakaway. This one would sting, especially considering the Hornets were unsuccessful on the power play.
When the second period drew to a close, the Hornets found themselves two goals behind and needing more offence if they were going to find a way back into the game. More offence is exactly what they got.
Five minutes into the third period, Steve Osman converted on the power play to give the Hornets hope again. Sadly, the one goal deficit would last a matter of seconds before Streatham would score again. Scott Bailey scored, making it 4-2 to the away side.
That is how the game would finish, the Hornets falling to their second defeat against Streatham this season. Next up for them, a trip to Southampton on Saturday to face the Solent Devils.
